Wax pens explained
What is a DAB pen and how does it work
A wax pen, often referred to as DAB pen or concentrates pen, is a slim, ultra portable device used to vaporize different types of Cannabis products obtained through extraction. These products are called shatter, wax, budder, crumble or rosin and are solid in comparison to oils.
Such an ecig pen works by placing a piece of concentrate inside the atomizer chamber and then keeping the button pressed for a few seconds to start the vaporization process. The user then inhales the vapor through the mouthpiece and repeats this process until the concentrate has been completely vaporized.
The anatomy of a vape pen for waxes and concentrates
The three main parts of a concentrates vape pen are: the battery, the atomizer or chamber and the mouthpiece.
The battery is usually fitted with a single button and has a diameter between 12.5m and 22mm. Capacity rangers from 650mAh to 1500mAh and it's usually charged via micro-USB or eGo style cable. To turn the device on or off the user has to press the button for five consecutive times.
The atomizer is usually made from ceramic or quartz and it's where the wax is placed in order to get vaporized. Ceramic donut atomizers are easier to use and clean but they take longer to reach the desired temperature. They also don't get as hot as their quarts counterparts.
Quartz rods atomizers use titanium wire as the heating element and these have a couple of advantages over ceramic. They heat up instantly, they deliver more intense vapor and they they preserve battery life. Flavor is usually better on ceramic DAB pens, but the overall experience if more intense with quartz rods.
The mouthpiece is the usually detachable and it's the tip through which the vapor is inhaled. This is made from plastic or other type of heat insulating material.
How to recharge your concentrates pen
There are two types of chargers used with DAB vape pens, and the one included in your kit depends mostly on product design.
A standard micro-USB charger only requires that the cable is plugged into the device and the power source. Some devices even allow vaping while charging. These are called pass-through wax pens.
An LED will usually stay lit during the charging process. This will turn off or change color once the process has ended.
Recharging and eGo style wax pen is a bit more complicated. The atomizer needs to first be removed from the battery to expose the connector. Then the charger needs to be connected to the battery and then plugged into an USB port or into a wall adapter.
The light will blink red during charging and it will turn green as soon as the battery has reached 100%.
